MPLF expresses condolence

Imphal, July 31 : The convenor, permanent body, Manipur Peoples Libeation Front have expressed condolence on the death of leader of Prepak, Urikkhinbam Meiraba in a press release issued last night. His untimely death is a great loss to the freedom struggle of Manipur, the release said. Meanwhile, the Prepak also ofered revolutionary salute to its departed leader in a separate press release.

Independence Day to be boycotted

Imphal, August 1 : Ten underground organisations of the North East region have jointly called for a boycott of the Independence Day celebration of India on August 15. In a joint statement, the organisations said that the celebration was a continued effort to legitimize the illegal occupation of the region. The organizations have called a general strike throughout the North East region from midnight of August 14 to 5 pm of August 15. The signatories to the press release are Arunachal Dragon Organisation, ADO, Dima Halam Daoga, DHD, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, HNLC, Kamatapur Liberation Organisation, KLO, Manipur People's Liberation Front, MPLF, National Democratic Front of Bodoland, NDFB, National Liberation Front of Tripura, NLFT, Tripura People's Democratic Front, TPDF, United Peoples' Democratic Solidarity, UPDS and the United Liberation Front of Asom, ULFA.

Ambush on BSF, 4 injured

Imphal, August 1 : Four personnels of the Border Security Force were injured when underground activists ambushed on their patrol party at B-Kaljang area, on the Churachandpur-Sugnu Road, about 13 kilometres north of Churachandpur police station. The incident occured when personnel of 33 BSF were on patrol duty. At around 6:15 am the underground activists attacked the BSF patrol by exploding two powerful improvised devices. The activists followed up the bomb attack with heavy gunfire. In the attack four personnel were injured and a bullet proof vehicle was seriously damaged. The four injured personnel have been identified as constable Pemkumar Singh, Romendra, Bijendra and Dhanabir and were airlifted to Leimakhong Army hospital. 
In the meantime, a spokesman of the United National Liberation Front, Manipur said that the attack was carried out by a tam of the Manipur People's Army's mobile task force.

Bandh supporters tried to cut off NH 53

Imphal, July 31 : Bandh supporters tried to cut off the National Highway 53 by damaging a bailey bridge over the Barak river at Oinamlong village in Tamenglong district. National Highway 53 is one of the important lifeline linking Manipur with the rest of India. The damage was believed to be done by the Naga activists which are protesting against the GOI's decision of withdrawal of NSCN (IM) ceasefire from Manipur. The bandh supporters removed some important iron support of the bridge. Army and Border Road Task Force have rushed in to the area to repair the bridge.

BSF forced villagers to menial labour

Imphal, August 1 : Personnel of 128 Bn BSF forced the villagers to clear the shrubs along the roads in Moirang Khunou yesterday. The villagers were returning from the field after a hard day work when they were stopped by the BSF personnel. Lateron, the representatives of Moirang Khunou Apunba Meira Paibi asked the authorities of BSF not to repeat such inhumane treatment.

Transfer of Naga employees

Imphal, August 1 : The United Naga Council have appealed to the Governor of Manipur to transfer the Naga employees serving under Government of Manipur to their respective districts. The UNC requested the Governor not to give punishment to any Naga employees for irregularities in view of the present law and order problem in the state.

HSLC Compartmental exam will be held in more centres

Imphal, August 1 : In a significant, the state government have consented to the demands of the tribal students of Manipur to hold High School Leaving Certificate Examination (Compartmental) at different centres. Earlier, the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur have decided to to hold the examination at Imphal centre only. The decision was taken after the government reviewed the stand of the BSEM in view of the law and order situation in the state. The examination was scheduled to begin from August 4 and postponed to August 18 , but will not begin from the notified date, as per the notification of the BSEM.

NSCN (K) asked UNC to top dancing to the tune of NSCN (IM)

Imphal, August 1 : The National Socialist Council of Nagaland led by S.S. Khaplang asked the United Naga Council to stop dancing to the tune of the NSCN (IM). The organizations also asked the UNC to analyse the general interest of the Nagas. The NSCN (K) warned the Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) to return to the original headquarters at Kakhulong, Imphal to avoid misleading the public. 

The NSCN (K) also lambasts the NSCN (IM) for the latter's stand to oppose the move for unification of the Naga groups. In a statement signed by Captain, N. Panmei, Chairman, Zeliangrong region, GPRN, the NSCN (K) questioned the intentions of NSCN (IM) for entering into ceasefire with their adversaries while rejecting the same initiated by other Naga groups. NSCN (IM) had plotted to eliminate the Naga National Council and NSCN (K), charged the statement.

Police arrested 7 PLA and 1 RPF

Imphal, August 1 : Imphal East district police have arrested four members of PLA yesterday morning from Khurai Chingangbam Leikai in an operation. The arrested members include Irungbam Pillani alias Leima, wing commander of PLA unit IV who was trained in Myanmar. In another incident, Imphal west district police arrested two members of PLA from Lalambung Makhong in Imphal west at 6.30 pm yesterday. In the same day district police arrested one PLA member from his house at Heirangoithong. In Churachandpur district, police arrested one RPF member the market area while collecting money from the shopkeepers.

Protest march at Moirang

Imphal July 31 : A rally was organised at Moirang in protest against the harassment meted out to the public by the BSF personnel after an encounter with the underground activisits yesterday. It was decided in a meeting participated by various club and organisations held at Purit Mandab, Moirang. In the meeting, an apex body called Committee on Moirang Bazar Accident was formed. The meeting resolved to condemn the firing and atrocities of BSF personnel. The meeting also appealed to the concerned underground groups to clarify through the media. The meeting also demanded ex gratia payment of Rs. five hundred thousands for the deceased and Rs. fifty thousand each for the injured. In the yesterday's encounter, one civilian was killed and several injured when BSF retaliated to an attack by the insurgents. Read earlier Report

Security Alert in Pallel

Imphal, July 31 : Security has been put to maximum alert in the Pallel area in Chandel district in view of the extortion call by the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (IM), according to a newspaper report here. The villagers of Kuraopokpi Tarung Louchan were threatened by the outfit to leave the place if they did not clear their due taxes. Each farmer was threatened to pay an annual tax of Rupees one thousand to the outfit, said the report.

Normal lives affected by the 72-hour bandh

Imphal, July 31 : Normal lives have been affected by the 72-hour bandh called by different Naga organisations in protest against the GOI's decision to withdraw ceasefire extension. The bandh was called by Naga Youth Front and began from midnight of July 30. The bandh, however, exempt essential services like educational institutions, medical, water supply, electricity, telecommunications, security personnel and cultivators.

Meanwhile, the Manipuri Students Federation call a highway bandh from midnight of July 31 to August 3 in protest against GOI's policy of inciting communal tension in the region. However, the bandh will exempt essential services. The federation appealed to the people of Nagaland not to interfere in the internal matters of Manipur. The federation also appealed to the tribal brethren in the hill not to support the bandh called by some Naga organisations.

Eight-point of Sangma to solve North East issue

Imphal, July 31 : With many political leaders voiced from North-east expressed their dissent over the inempt handling of North-East issue by Padmanabhaiah, the Vajpayee government is bringing in more voices from the north-east to settle the issue arising out of the Naga ceasefire controversy. Among them is former Lok Sabha speaker Purno A. Sangma, who is also named as the probable interlocutor of GOI for talks with the NSCN (IM).
Mr Sangma's has given an eight-point proposal to the GOI on handling insurgency in the north-east. He suggests that more militant groups must be drawn into negotiations with New Delhi. "If you have to solve this problem on a permanent basis talking to one group will not be enough, we have to have north-east as a whole. So we may have to talk to some other groups if not everybody but at least some major groups," said Mr Sangma.
