Rifles bust UNLF Advance HQs
Imphal,
August 9 : In a major operation launched by the Assam Rifles
in the last few days, one Sergeant Major in charge of publicity
of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF) was killed
today and two other front ranking cadres of the same
organisation was nabbed along with weapons, communications
equipments and indiscriminating documents while another
insurgent was shot down by police commandos at Uripok.
The Publicity in
charge of UNLF has been identified as one Sgt. Major Laishram
Ashok @ Goroba @ Lanthoiba @ Thoiba @ John. A .38 original
Chinese pistol and a few indiscriminating documents were
arrested from his posession.
Two
others, Sgt. Major Yumnam Chaobi @ Thoibi @ Amubi @ Sumati @
Leima @ Reeta @ Panthoi, Commander of the Transportation and
Communication wing of the Advanced General HQs of UNLF in Imphal
and Sgt. Major Thongam Jiten @ James @ Romi @ Khelemba,
Commander of the Medical Department of UNLF was also arrested by
the Assam Rifles. The
Assam Rifles said, nine other cadres and sympathisers of the
banned UNLF were also arrested from different places in Imphal.

Written
communication on the cards
Imphal
August 9 : The Centre has assured the joint forum of Manipur
MLAs and MPs that it will send a written communication regarding
the revocation of the ceasefire without territorial limits
signed between the GOI and the NSCN (IM) on June 14 at Bangkok,
according to Dr. Chandramani, spokesman
of the forum. Addressing
the local press for the first time since the June 18 incident
the spokesman said, the utmost task before the representatives
is restoration of communal harmony and bridging the gap between
the Nagas and the Meiteis.
Today,
some more MLAs arrived at Imphal from Delhi since the
restoration of normalcy. Meanwhile,
the United Committee, Manipur has warned against politicising of
the territorial integrity movement launched by the Manipur
public.

Meeting of MU held
Imphal, August 9 : An emergency meeting of Manipur
University Syndicate was held today at 11 a.m. The meeting was
convened to discuss the demands of the Manipur University
Teachers Association for resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. It
may be mentioned that the MUTA has submitted an ultimatum that
the union would start cease work strike from August 14 unless VC
tendered resignation for his inability to run the University
smoothly.

Provision for unconditional release : State Police
Imphal,
August 10 : The state police department has not prepared for
unconditional release the agitators arrested during the
anti-ceasefire extension movement. According to a statement issued
by the public relations officer of the state police department,
persons arrested under specific sections of laws for rioting, arson,
etc. There is no provision in the law for withdrawal of cases during
investigation, said the statement.

(K) imposes Dress Code
Imphal,
August 10 : Underground outfit, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (K)
banned the use of Salwar, Sari, Pants by the Manipuri ladies from
August 12, according to a press release issued in the name of Gen.
Secretary of the outfit. KYKL(K) also banned the five day Krishna
Janma festival to be organized by ISKCON.

on boycott
Imphal,
August 10 : The All Manipur Students Union has said that no
decision for boycott of classes and postponement of examinations was
taken by it to press the demand for unconditional release of the
agitators. It also clarified that examinations and classes will not
be disturbed unless the situation calls so.
